In 2006, Santa Maria de Garoña nuclear power plant was advised that an unexpected
presence of zebra mussels had been found upstream of the plant intake. In response
to this imminent threat, the plant management established an interdisciplinary zebra
mussel response team.
As part of the response, RNT Consulting Inc. was invited to examine the plant facilities
and prepare a report on areas of risk to the plant from zebra mussels. By 2008,
Garoña nuclear power plant had implemented a majority of the changes suggested by
RNT Consulting and we were invited to perform a one year follow-up, review the mitigation
steps taken to minimize the impact of zebra mussels, and make suggestions for further
improvements.
