Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) has been aware of the quagga mussel presence
in Lake Mead since early in 2007. SNWA took immediate steps to minimize the potential
impact of quagga mussels on all facilities, implementing a quagga monitoring program
and seeking expert opinion on all steps taken. SNWA has taken on the role of an
industry leader, facilitating information exchange among the industry and informing
congressional representatives of the impact quagga mussels have on the facilities.
To evaluate the current situation and to make suggestions for alternative treatments,
SNWA contracted RNT Consulting Inc. to review four drinking water plants, two existing
and one planned intake as well as various associated structures. In addition, RNT
Consulting Inc. met with representatives of the National Park Service from the Lake
Mead National Recreational Area, a representative from the Basic Water Company,
representatives of the City of Henderson Drinking Water Plant and a representative
from the Lake Las Vegas Marina.
